Surviving a Teenaged Daughter

No one ever tells you what to expect when raising a teenage girl. Your little girl, who once wore cute dresses and let you put her hair up in ribbons, is now a moody teenager. Whether you’re trying to find a gift for a 13-year-old girl or trying to communicate with her to find out how her day went good luck.

There are some things that you can pretty much expect when you have a teenaged daughter.

They will change your body.

Regardless of the type of body you had before your pregnancy, it will be different when you’re done with it. You can say goodbye to the days of a natural bikini body and smooth skin.

They will steal your stuff.

Teenage girls have no shame about going through your belongings to find what they need. Whether they’re searching for makeup or feminine products, they’ll find them and take them without asking.

They always need transportation.

Until your daughter turns 16 and gets a driver’s license and a car, you’re going to be taking her everywhere. Whether she needs to go to school, a sports game, or a friend’s house, you’re going to drive her there.

Their hypochondria is real.

One day your daughter will have cramps, and the next day she’ll be suffering from a headache that she absolutely can’t deal with. While most of these ailments will just be growing pains, they’ll seem like the end of the world to her. But be warned, if you suggest going to the doctor, she’ll feel better in an instant.

You will feel jealous.

Your teenaged daughter will probably have smooth skin, no wrinkles, and a body you would die for. She will also have a better fashion sense, and you’ll wish you looked half as good.

Girls have bodily functions too.

Your daughter will fart. She’ll have body odor. She will make the bathroom smell bad. Get used to it.

Teenagers are the queens of snark.

You’ll be amazed at the amount of snark that can come from your daughter’s mouth. While you may try to act like a dignified adult, you’ll find that you’ll respond with a similar level of maturity.

You won’t be able to set a perfect example.

Everyone has body image issues that they don’t want to pass on to their daughters. Even if you try, some of your insecurities will come out. Do your best to balance the good with the bad.

Your teenaged daughter will make you feel dumb.

Teenagers are smart and always learning. Your daughter will be better informed on many issues and won’t be able to believe how little you know.

She will be your best lifelong friend.

Daughters can be a pain to raise, but they’re worth it. Hopefully, your daughter will be able to confide in you when life gets hard and be there for you when you need a hug.

When things get hard with your daughter, always remember that this phase will pass with time. Enjoy the good times, and brace for the bad ones.
