Introduction
We are spoiled when it comes to streaming services. Some would say too spoiled! Netflix, Hulu, CBS Access, VUDU, Apple TV, Disney+: to list out all of the services available would mean writing out an entire pamphlet. But one streaming service that doesn’t get enough credit or attention? Amazon Prime Video.
Yes, Amazon Prime offers their own streaming service, and if you subscribe to Prime, it’d be foolish not to not use it whenever possible. It has plenty of shows and movies, especially those in the comedic genre. Unfortunately, sometimes the show that you want to watch may not be available in every country. While Amazon Prime is available in 200+ countries, the libraries offered in each country are different. To watch a specific show, you will need an Amazon Prime VPN to circumvent geographical restrictions.
Top 7 Comedy Shows
1. Upload (2020)
Upload stars Robbie Amell as Nathan Brown, a quirky 27-year old grad student/computer programmer that dies and is uploaded to Lake View, the “digital afterlife”.
From there, he meets his handler Nora, who walks him through the digital afterlife. The show describes itself as a comedy-drama and focuses on Nathan’s death and his adventures in the afterlife. I highly recommend you check this one out if you’re a fan of comedy or drama.
2. South Park (1997-Present)
Who hasn’t heard of South Park by now? Since its inception in 1997, South Park has over 307 viewable episodes, and all of them are available on Amazon Prime Video.
South Park uses a recurring cast of children to tell jokes and stories, the jokes ranging from crude to topical humor. Because the show often pulls from recent events, many of the early episodes feel somewhat dated, but they’re still worth a watch if you don’t mind crude humor every now and then.
3. Community (2009-2015)
Sitcoms reigned supreme in the 200’s, and Community earned a reputation as one of the greats—a timeless classic.
Community focuses on a group of college students and is heavily based on writer Dan Harmon’s experiences, exaggerated of course. The first season lacks substance, but later seasons turn Community into a classic sitcom that any sitcom fan should binge.
4. The Office (2005-2013)
If we’re going to talk about early 2000’s sitcoms, it’d be a crime not to mention The Office, the staple of TV sitcoms.
The Office is a “mockumentary”, a show that parodies the style of documentaries. The Office “documents” a group of office workers at a bland paper company. However, the antics they get into are anything but bland.
Tens of millions of people have watched this show, but if you haven’t there’s no better time to start than now. Unfortunately, The Office will be leaving the service soon due to contract troubles.
5. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Speaking of mockumentaries, what would happen if you mixed Dracula with The Office? You’d get What We Do in the Shadows!
What We Do in the Shadows has the same premise as The Office but instead follows a group of friends that also happen to be vampires. Sounds wacky, I know, but it’s extremely funny and pulls off the mockumentary style well.
The movie is so good, in fact, that there’s even a show series! Like mockumentaries but have watched The Office one too many times? Give this show a try!
6. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
No name in Hollywood has the same effect than that of Edgar Wright, the director and producer of movies such as Scott Pilgrim, Hot Fuzz, and Shaun of the Dead. Out of all these, Shaun of the Dead marks Edgar Wright’s brilliance as a director and screenwriter.
Shaun of the Dead parodies zombie movies by focusing on a dysfunctional group of friends surviving the zombie invasion in a pub.
Stocked with clever writing and amazing camera work, there’s a reason why Shaun of the Dead is considered a comedy classic.
7. Booksmart (2019)
Booksmart is yet another coming-of-age movie in a genre that is littered with them. However, Booksmart has decent writing and does a well-enough job standing up on its own legs.
Booksmart follows high school seniors Amy and Molly in a search to get friends, find love, and experience everything the world has to offer. This movie is a bit NSFW, but it’s a good movie—just not one you’d watch with your kids in the room.
Conclusion
Amazon Prime Video contains so many good comedy shows and movies. Even if you don’t shop on Amazon often, Prime Video pays for itself, especially if you’re someone that likes to binge their shows and movies.
